I'm having difficulty with my hood sitting down on the passenger side front corner. I was fooling around with the adjustments and it seems the aluminum nut/ bolt that goes in the hinge and hood is stripped. I tried to re-tap the threads but no go. Any suggestions on fixing this? I also discovered that with the top nut/bolt stripped out and unable to tighten, the hood sits flush? LOL... Maybe I should keep it loose. Are these nut/ bolts suppose to be tight or just snug? or........?
Mid fifty sells oversize thread hinge bolts for this common problem. They aren't cheap but neither is any other way to fix it. They are supposed to have a wavy washer on them to take up any play between the hinge and bolt head. They do not need to be tightened very tight, they don't actually fasten anything and were evidently safety wired from the factory since they have holes drilled for the wire. The oversized bolts are not drilled however.
AX - Thanks for the info. I don't have the wavy washer on my either. I assumed they were suppose to be tight, that's the one got stripped out. I have the bolt back in and it tightens up to a point and then gets stripped. I'm going to leave it for now. May be a good excuse to put that reverse hinges on like everyone else. I'm curious if a standard bolt with a washer would work. Maybe a nylon bushing for the oversized hole that the bolt fits into? Just a thought. At least my hood sits normal again. LOL>
The bolt just provides a pivot for the hinge arm to turn on, doesn't "hold" anything so only needs to be snug to keep it from falling out or safety wired. The wavy washer is there to keep it from rattling. I had two stripped out on my hood when I got it, replaced one with an oversize, the other turned out to be the bolt was stripped a new replacement bolt fixed it.
I saw Mid Fifties has them for $10 each. I was playing around with one yesterday since I had two extra that were in the glove box of the truck. I cut the threads off completely and drilled a hole down the middle. Then I tapped it out with a 5/16- 24 tap and simply screwed a long stainless allen bolt in the middle. Haven't tried it yet.

If I remember right there is no way to get a bolt or nut behind the mounting plate on the hood.
Ax - Your right, but since the threads are aluminum on the bolt, they tend to strip out before the threads on the hinges. I use a tap on hinges thread to clean them up also. No way to put a behind it. I guess you could always drill and tap it out to 3/8"?
Ed, I've been thinking about going with the tilt hood seriously. Do you know what kit he used on his hood? A friend of mine has no limit set up and really hates it. Nothing lines up correctly. Maybe we can have an install a hood day at my house? HINT LOL...
I need one also. RJ has his pinned at the edge of the front fenders. I think he has pic's in his gallery. I think we might need more then one day to do two trucks. I know part of the alimment is loosening all the fender and rad bolts to get a nice clean fit. I heard the same on the No Limit set-up. From what I know and heard CPP has the best. I might be able to get a deal on the CPP set-up let me know if you are interested.
If I stay with my hinged hood I need to wear a hard hat when working under the hood. I must have picked up two or three this past weekend changing my radiator. With the hair gone the dents in the head show. We can show off our battle scars.
I've got the no limit set up and it works great. hood alighnment is as good as any any that I have seen. Don't be afraid of it! I got a few tips from Rob and Tim at No-Limit and it works as advertised.
