O2 sensors

98 expy 4X4 5.4 I got the dreaded P0171 & 174 the other day. Have changed the Air filter, PCV, Fuel filter, and checked all vaccum lines with no apparent leaks found. Local FORD mechanic said to change both O2 sensors on the before CAT end of system and see what that would do. Sensors are nearly $100 each from Ford, and he said 2 hours to remove and replace. At a paltry $81.00 per hour. Sounds like an expensive shotgun technique to try and MAYBE fix something. I found the O2 sensors for $47.99 each (Bosch) at O'reily's and they do not seem that they should be too awful hard to swap yourself. Thought's or ideas???? It is running fine, maybe a little rough on the idle, but the gas milage is definantly down which is another reason the O2 sensors were narrowed down as the culprit. Again any help or ideas?

How do you test this? All these sensors don't come cheap and it all seems like a great way to chuck alot of money into maybe's!

I am going to buy the kit to replace the vaccum lines tomorrow. Namely the ones around the PVC valve and the one that runs to the back of the intake (the supposed notorious cracker). Anyone got any tips on installing this? Anyone ever done it themselves?

Engine is running rough definantly at idle. O2 sensors are looking more and more like they are in my future. MAF was cleaned with electric cleaner and a Qtip. Took it in to have the codes read again, after pulling the battery and letting the computer reset, and still came up with P0171 & P0174.
Looks like I will be venturing into the O2 sensors this weekend. Anyone got a link or better description on doing this? Someone said there is a tipsheet on this site but I can't seem to find it.

Also anyone know how to test the MAF? $58.00 + $32.00 core at parts shop and I'd like to not buy all this crap and have it be the last thing on the list that fixes it. I'm gonna do the O2's out of pure maintenance anyway as I will be driving a good long distance (pending getting this hiccup worked out) in a few weeks and the sensors in it appear to be factory with 150k on them. My mileage has gone through the floor, not that they are great anyway but to go from 15mpg average to under 12 reeks of bad tidings.

O2 sensors are easy, first you need the O2 sensor socket avalible at the auto store you buy the sensors. Any O2 sensor over 80K miles is suspect anyway... Remember they come out easy with a warm engine (not hot -ouch) Also the day before spray alittle penetrating oil on them let sit overnight. They will come out like butter.
As far as the MAF, There is no good way I know of to test it at home. For a test contact you local savage yard you should find one cheap $30? a new one is $100 or more aftermarket $300 from Ford.

The hose is simple I did it on mine several months ago just because, it came with a new PCV and was $22 from Ford.
