Need some 302 help

Hello to All

I have a problem I need to answer and am writing to see if any of you knowledgeable people can help. I have a 302 2v motor out of a 78 or 79 fairmont that I am going to build to install into my 63 round body falcon, when looking for a crank kit I have been asked to provide the casting numbers from the old crank. Now here is the problem, for the life of me I can’t find the old crank I have looked everywhere and no crank. I am to understand that I have two choices a crank stamped “2M, 2MA, 2MBA, or 2MAD” all of which will fit and is the most common application or a crank stamped “2MAE” which will cause vibration problems if the wrong crank is used. I’m sure the block didn’t change so can anyone tell me how to resolve this problem? Is it just a matter of choosing the right balancer and flywheel? I don’t want to have to have a trail by error, had too many of those in the past. I don’t want to have to start from scratch because I already have $250.00 in the block. I am also open to any and all suggestions towards the remaining pieces of the engine. I’m trying to get around 300+ horses with mostly stock parts. I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and help if possible.

Tom

There id 2 differences in the cranks.
  1. 81 and older motors used 28 oz balance cranks and 82 and up used 50 oz balance cranks.
  2. Older motors used a two piece rear main seal newer motors used a one piece seal. Not sure on the year the change was made.
The 78/79 motor would use the 28 oz crank and you can look at the block and determine which type oil seal it used.

82 and back i believe had the 2-piece rear main seal!just curious, you said that the motor came out of a 79-80 fairmont and you believe that it had not been changed!79-80 fairmonts, ltd, marquis, granada's came with the 260 ci small block also and is very easy to mistake it for the 302.In case you weren't aware of this i thought i mention it to you. good luck!
