1987 B2 4x4. When I hit washboard bumps I have a thump in the drivers floorboard. It only does it on these type of bumps, not big bumps or pot holes. I thought it was the radius arm bushing so I replaced them. They needed it anyway. Did not fix the problem. The shock are Rancho 5000's that are 3 or 4 years old. I am now leaning towards the bushings being bad in the shock. Not yet looked at it. If it is this can these bushings be repalced. If not this what else should I look at. The thump feels like it hits where the floorboard rolls up to the firewall. Ball joints seem tight. Thanks
Replacement is very easy. Remove the lower shock bolt, and the shock will drop down. Remove the bushings. If they are stuck, a C Clamp and pipe nipple, or deep socket on the opposite side will help. Replacement urethane shock bushings are available from Rough Country, 4 Wheel Parts, etc.. On some shock mounts, it helps to use a fender washer as a bushing to snug things up, rather that bending the mount ears.
Well I replaced the shock bushing. I still have the thump. Steering components look good, ball joint seem fine, motor mounts look okay. What is left. I thought about the tranny crossmember bushings. They look saggy, but the tump is in front of that. I guess it could be transmitting the thumo from elsewhere. Can you replace the crossmember bushings or do I have to find a different crossmember? Thanks
Well I still have it. The ball joints were a little loose so I replaced them. Wiggle of the tire by hand did not show anything, put a prybar under the tire and they moved. Had it alinged after the ball joints, so I assume they checked the steering parts before they did it. I also checked the body mounts. I still have the thump. Seems to be getting worse. No the shifter does not move. If it ended up being the tranny crossmember bushings what do I do. Are the bushings replaceable or do I need to find a new one. And if that is the case will either the man. or auto crossmember work.
Well to summarize. I have replaced the shock bushings, the radius arm brackets that attach to the frame, the radius arm bushings, the ball joints, checked the body mounts, check the motor mount, no wiggle in the shifter, and checked the steering box bolts. Still thumping. I firmly believe it is coming from the drivers wheel area. It thumps worse when I turn left and the body rolls to the rights and unloads the drivers side suspension. Going to the alignment shop Thurs. to see if they can find it. I'm tired of rolling around on the ground trying to find a ghost. Any new guesses?
Sometimes (at least in other types of vehicles) that noise can be caused by a loose/broken steering box mounting bolt. At least, that was the case with my Jeep. That would be a simple thing to check. Good luck.
It may be the fingers that hold the coil. The coil might not be seated properly. Or the fingers might be bent away from the coil allowing the coil to move around.
Check the front body mounts(right under the radiator support) These are known to corrode to nothing, causing all sorts of noises.
