I have done alot of reading on this and i have a couple of questions.I just installed a set of autometer phantom gauges. And i put the sensor in the test port on the trans.I havent ran the truck to long to notice if the gauge is working.I went down the road about a mile and half and back the gauge was between 100 and 150 so call it 125 and the outside temp is about 70 but from the time i started down the road the stock gauge is in the middle.Does the stock gauge suck this bad?I didnt ground the gauge down by the sender like it says to in the directions from autometer do you think this would affect it?Or is the trans truely running this cool right now with no load.I noticed when i took the ground off the gauge it went up to 210 but i assume its because of no ground the gauge will just keep going because of not grounding.Any help would be great i also forgot to tell you guys that it doesnt have a aftermarket trans cooler on it yet but i will soon. Thanks just want to make sure its reading correctly i have heard that it takes a good 20 miles of driving sometimes for the trans to really get warmed up does anyone know if there is any truth to this? Thanks guys for any help.

the short answer is YES... the stock gauge is UTTERLY USELESS...! leave it to ford to put a guage on these trucks that SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THEM OVER 20 YEARS AGO... then... they set it up so that it only moves when you've already COOKED your tranny.... just so some dopey service writer won't have to explain that the gauge is working properly when it reads differently becuase you are towing to some idiot who shouldn't even OWN a psd...! i guess that just about sums it up...! your new gauge seems to be reading right... go tow something heavy on a hot day... you'll see it move...! i have the tru-cool tranny cooler on the way... gonna add it to the stock tranny cooler...
It takes awhile for the temp to rise. The stock thing in the dash sees a rise then just says, "bing - normal".
Drive at least 10 miles, more is better, then you'll see more of a rise. Tow something if you really want to see a rise.
As for the ground, some of the sending units ground themselves, like the DiPricol.
The gauge itself will need it's own ground, you should hook that back up.
Junk stock gauge i didnt think they where that bad TILL NOW....That thing is truely a POS wait till i explain it to the wife and she goes to work she works at fords with the engineers .......lol

PLEASE tell her to tell those meatheads that ALL OF THE GUAGES SHOULD BE AS ACCURATE AS POSSIBLE...! NO MORE IDIOT LIGHTS DISGUISED AS ANALOG GAUGES...! EVEN CHEVY DOESN'T DO THAT...!
I will tell her but she gets mad at me because i pick on the engineers who design alot of these trucks and cars.We went to a get together a few weeks ago and she introduced me to some of the higher ups and engineers and i got my few cracks in on them on some of the vehicles they designed and i have wrenched on in the past. The funny part is half the time they dont even relize you are picking on them they think its a compliment.

I've got a friend in the body business. He tells me that the repairs on some of the Ford products are so difficult...... that he is convinced that somewhere, sometime a design engineer found a body man in bed with his wife, and has been getting his revenge ever since. After looking at the cab removal of MrBass's truck just to do an engine replacment.........I'm not so sure another engineer didn't find a mechanic there. LOL
