Question rear end and gas problems

its a 1986 f-150 xlt lariat 4x4. how do i i tell what rear i end i have. It is a ten bolt rear. is it a 9" or 8.8 or something else?

ok the my gas problem...when im fillin up at the pump, i can put in a few gallons and the nozzle will click like its full. then i release the nozzle and start again and then it does the same thing. it does this for both tanks. and one other problem. My gas guage is always reading way off. like it showing full all the time. how do i solve this problem. thanks for the time and help

The rear end is easy enough to identify. An 8.8 inch has a removable cover on the back side of the pmpkin. The 9 inch has a removeable 3rd member that unbolts from the housing on the front side of the pumpkin.

The fuel filling problem is likely related to plugged vent tubes that are made to let air our as fuel goes in. If these are plugged up, filling up becomes a real chore.

The fuel gauge is another issue. I suffer a similar problem with it only reading up to 3/4 full, and it seems to hit empty really fast. It does drive for a long while after hitting the big E, so I know it's not reading correctly either. It could be the gauge itself, or the sending unit in the tank, and if memory serves me correctly, there's a resister on the backside of the gauge panel that tends to fail, and can cause all kinds of havoc with the gauges in general.
