I want to add a GPS unit to my vehicle....I have my laptop mounted and this is what I want to do.
I want to be able to use the laptop as the actualy GPS unit itself....mount some type of antennae on my vehicle outside and on my monitor I have the same info as on handheld GPS units and it would show my location on a detailed map and such.....
Get a DeLorme EarthMate with Street Atlas 2005. Will cost less than $150 and can be purchased online or from any Staples office supply store. I use it for all my RV deliveries.

I found this on ebay....would this work?
Also if it would work.....does it have everything i need in it to go right to work?
Found what on eBay? Street Atlas? If so, yes... Earthmate GPS receiver is worth about $100, mapping software is about $40 or so. You need the latest mapping software for accurate road info. Combined package has everything you need.

Sorry....forgot to place the item number.

Yeah, it will work. They're starting at 85 bucks because the software is almost a year old. The 2006 version comes out next month. I was informed by a Delorme tech of this. You can take a USB extention and stick the GPS head on your rear window on the inside. Works fine. The 2005 version will do fine, I've got 2004 and all the roads I've been on are on there. The head will also work with other brands of mapping software and with Netstumbler. What are you using to mount your laptop? Something like in the LEO cars?

fire rooster- I've got a magellan hand held and really like it. Biggest thing I liked about it is that it's not only waterproof, but it floats as well. Waterproofing doesn't do you much good when it's at the bottom of the lake. Need to get software for it to get more detailed maps.
medic 66- I think there are a lot of handhelds that you can use in the manner you are looking for, and still use it independently. Mine came with a computer hook up so I can use it as the GPS receiver and then on a laptop have other software to show maps and directions. I can also still take it out and put it in my pocket and have a more portable gps for about the same price, maybe a little more.
