replaced alt. because the parts store said they couldnt check old one, and i had no voltage at the volt gauge in the dash. the new one didnt work either. it is still putting out only 12.3 volts, any ideas what colud be the problem?
Welcome to FTE Detour. Why not run this ride by your favorite autoparts store, like Advance Auto, AutoZone, ect & have them do a no cost electrical system check up on the vehicle, with everything in place, with their portable test machine. It'll likely be able to pinpoint the problem. Could be any of a number of things, from a faulty new alternator, slipping belt, bad high resistance battery cables, to loose dirty corroded cable connections at the battery, or ground connections to the block. Let us know what you find.
IT should be putting out 14.6 when that battery has a full charge and with nothing on but the engine itself. I've heard of alternators not working proberly from the wire from the computer that goes to the alternator not putting out a good signal. Thats only a shot in the dark, it was a problem on my 99 toyota corolla i drive for work. Pull the codes off the ECM and go from there.
