glass pack tips

i have been looking at a kit that starts right after the catalytic converter and it goes to a Y pipe then to glasspack tips right under the bumper. How do yal think this will sound on a 80' 351M with stock manifolds and a "dummy" catylitic converter? i want something that will really make the 8 cylinder really roar, i want the POPS and loud noise that the glasspacks are noted for.

I just installed a new Edelbrock Performer 400 intake and 650 CFM carb on my 1980 351M, and needed to upgrade my exhaust also. My chassis is a 2 WD stock shortbox stepside with short exhaust terminating at the cab. Stock manifold, no emissions, no catalytic, glasspack muffler, 2 1/4 inch diameter pipes throughout.

I simply duplicated what I had on the passenger side on the driver's side, eliminating the cross-over pipe. Drove it for the first time last night, and without the "pops" you refer to, it sounds totally awesome - exactly what I hoped for.

Good luck !
JT

Nice. im not sure if i want my truck any louder, i took it for its first good drive around the john belk frwy and she makes a lot of noise, even with what i assume is the stock muffler. if you want to talk to the person riding with you, you need to justa bout YELL over to him. I saw a cherry bomber at pep boys for a bout 20 bucks, but they didnt have a 2.5 inch one to fit my exhaust. what a shame.

Go to advance and ask for a Red Hot glasspack, way better quality then the Cherry bomb. Glasspack tips are junk and will start to rattle fairly soon after you put them on. For the most part though the pops won't really come into play till you put true duals and glasspacks on though, then it gets fun, also, with dual 2.25" you won't really need to yell, I have done lots of systems like this and have never had that problem (literally, name a place for the tails to exit and i have had it)

I wouldn't go with Cherry bomb or Patriot.. both are very cheaply made.

slash - if you do your dummy cat make sure you have a straight pipe running through it so the surrounding gasses don't cool and interupt exhaust flow, and slow down things due to the open air chambers.

thats what i planned on doing, Romer. i figured i could either just make a pipe fit through it, or custom cut a pipe: cut a slim sliver of metal down the entire pipe to make it just a hair smaller to be able to fit inside a pipe the same original diameter, then maybe get someone to weld the pipe inside the cat to make it nice and tight.

How much would a 2 1/2 inch red hot run me?

Any glass pack or cherry bomb muffler, will be around $20 each, depending on length. The shorter the louder, just to let you know( if you already didn't). If you put duals, then you have some noise. My next truck, I don't think I'm going to put mufflers, just straight pipes from the headers.

Oh, I forgot, red hots or the Purple Hornies, bit more $$ but a bit nicer tone.

they are that much at VIP Auto Parts or any other store. $20 USD is all I paid when I was in maine for my Flowtech Red Hots. Awesome sound and I love it.
