Bypassing Air Conditioning

Greetings All,

Would anyone know if we can/how to bypass the a/c compressor on a 1999 F150 5.4L engine?

I purchased a s/belt today that is suppose to be for a non-air F150 but I couldn't figure out how to make it work. The NAPA store had very little to no info. on a non-air '99' F150.

Thank you for any help you can lend me,

bob

Why by pass it? if the pulley is rattling/ac clutch is bad, you can replace it for around $50 or so and you can do it yourself with some loaner tools from autozone.

Not knowing anything about a/c I was hoping for a quick fix while I figured out what was wrong and I saved up the $ for the repair.

The dealer ball parked the replacement of the compressor @ $900 (parts and Labor)

The clutch is rattling around and there's a lot of noise when the a/c is running. Sounds like a bunch of marbles in a tin can...

How would I determine
  • If compressor is bad
  • If clutch is bad (I'm fairly sure something's wrong with this)
Thanks for the info,

bob

this is common on these trucks and on other brands as well, the compressor is more than likely okay , the clutchs and the bearing will go bad, you can fix this your self with a puller and replacement clutches are pretty cheap, you don't have to touch the compressor or the lines, just remove the pulley/clutch.hope this help

buy chiltons and look it up, there may be a tech articles here on FTE on how to do it.check here.

Oh the noises you your describing seem to fit the problem.

The non a/c trucks have an idler pulley in the compressor which is why the shorter belt won't work. If you removed the compressor then installed the idler from a non A/C truck, then it would work. Does it make noise with the compressor off? If not, then just unplug the clutch until you get it fixed.

WOW, $900 to repair it? I'm glad I bought the extended warranty. I just had mine replaced yesterday along with the accumulator/dryer and orfice tube because it started getting a bit noisy and the mechanic said there was evidence of metal in the system. So they replaced it all including flushing the system, along with a rental car (2004 F150 Supercrew 4.6L) overnight while repairing it. All of this cost me $50.00.

Thank you for your help!

With the system set to Off the noises are minimal with only what I guess is the clutch rattling around.

I'm going to try and round up the parts and documentation for the repair after the holiday. Haven't found a Chiltons yet and the Haynes repair manual only provided info. on compressor removal/repair.

Once again, thank you for giving me some understanding of my problem...

Well I just thought I'd post this for user reference.

To make a long story short...either my clutch and/or compressor seized up. The truck stalled at a light and wouldn't start. After removing the belt and starting it was determined that the a/c was seized up.

The estimates for repair allow for the potential replacement of lines, compressor assy. and condensor. Totaling around $900-$1200

Not wanting/able to afford this I've opted for removing the A/C compressor and converting to Non A/C configuration.

This configuation includes:

New tensioner assy. (grooved) $54 @ dealer
Shorter S.Belt $46

Unfortunately the Compressor had to be removed to make this work. It was a long day on the road making this repair.

Once again thank you all,

bob

Glad you got it going again, sorry that you don't have a/c though

You might want to call a couple of junk yards to check for an A/C compressor. The lastone I bought was for a 1989 F250 that NAPA wanted about $500 for a reman. compressor with the clutch/pulley on it. I got it at the junk yard for $50 complete, and I drove it 75,000 miles with no problems when I sold it.

Junk yard units are ok as long as the system hasn't been opened up allowing moisture and air into it.
