E4OD Tranny problems!

My grandpa drives a '85 F150 with the auto E4OD transmission. Lately it will while driving switch into neutral by itself, and lose power to everything, all he can do then is coast. A mechanic has replaced the sensor 3 times, and still had the same problem.

I did a search, didn't really find anything relating to this, although I just skimmed some threads.

So my question is, could it be the transmission itself? They want to charge $2500 to swap out for a new one, but I would like to make sure this is not solved a different way before forking over that kind of cash. I don't see how a sensor would cause it to shift by itself, so I was thinking the gears are messed up or lose or something, letting it slide or jam into neutral. Please, any insight would help at this point. Thanks in advance.

I'd take it to an actual transmission shop, as opposed to just a general mechanic. A lot of times, the specialty shops are better than the general shops for such a diagnosis. I can't see a sensor being the problem, as the sensors are generally for speed only. This sounds more like a linkage or loose cable problem, or possibly a wiring problem.

I agree with RR4E. A transmission shop specialize more in this kind of thing. Good luck!
