Hi all, this is my first post, this my question. I have a 86 f150 2x4 with a 4spd and was wondering if I could put a 5spd in it's place. Any help would be would be great.
Find a 5 speed donor truck, and make sure you grab things like cross-members, trans mounts, drive-shaft, etc. Everything that might be attached to the trans, with the exception of the bellhousing(use the one you have) should be taken. You may need the parts. Better to have them on hand, than not have them at all.
Hey, welcome to the site. If you do a search in the clutch and driveline section of the forums, you'll find some very good posts about this sort of a swap. But if you are going for a 5spd, your best choice is the ZF 5spd that is behind most F250 and 350 models from 88 up to the mid 90's (someone help me out on that...). Tricky part is to find one that came on the same bellhousing, and don't get one of the later ones that had the parking brake at the end of the tranny. The inline 6 was the small bellhousing, so one behind the 300, the 302, or the 351 will match. I say that only because the Mazda 5spd in the light duty trucks wasn't very strong and broke all the time. Basically do what RR4E suggested and get those parts because you never know what exactly you'll need and its better to make only one trip. Also try to grab the clutch master cylinder as the ZF utilizes a hydraulic clutch and the line connecting the master to the slave cylinder. You may need to change your flywheel because the ZF requires a 12" clutch, but check cause some of the '86 models had a flywheel that had the proper holes to hold both the 11" and 12".
