is it common for the spare tire carrier on the 89 bII to rattle like hell on any bump? the last time i checked the bolts (which was a while ao were tight, but the thing rattles really bad, seems to be coming from the bottom bump stop and from the hinges themselves. any input?
Mine does it as well on my 84 and its a metal to metal shreak, it gets to me, but mine come from the metal lever and the bump stop on the bottom. I really dont know how to fix it so I live with it. I gets really intense when you get axel hope offroad in the sand. = (
unfortunatly it is common, my old bII did it as well as every bII iv ever riddin in, the stock carryers are week to and also can damage your tailgate if your running an over sized offroad tire on your carrier. im gonna personly look at cross bracing mine with some. i dont know when ill get around to it though. also on james duff's website i noticed they also had an nice kit as well
i just pulled the pin on the hinge end of my lever. put two rubber grommets in the holes and put it back in. I'm going to find a rubber cap for the pole/stud that the lever rests on (where my shrieking comes from)... and some rubber inside the housing that the lever passes through. I couldn't take it anymore
Annoying racket on my 88 caused by the two hinge pins being worn out. Cut a carpenters pencil into two inch segments and tapped them into space between pin and bracket. Limits access to rear door, but stopped the infernal noise. In the end, got a solid carrier off a wreck and swapped out.
Good Luck
Wanted to mention that noise that sounds like spare tire carrier could also come from worn bushings on hinge pins.(nader type bolts) Wrap with 3/4 inch electrical tape for a quick fix.
