Rebuilding my first engine. 92-93' 5.0L H.O. New rings, main bearing, and rod bearings. Crand has also been micro polished. I just put it together. Torqued main caps to 65ft lbs. Torqued rod bolts to about 24ft lbs. No motor wont turn over! Checked rod bolts and engine wont turn over if I tighten them past about 12ft lbs!!! Pistons are in right. It has to be something with connecting rods. Are my caps on wrong? Bearings were installed right. I installed them with the numbers on the cap and on the rods on the same side like it says to in my chiltons manual. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP.
my first thought would be are ur bearings the right size? sounds like u got to big of underground brearings sounds like u got .020" under when u needed .010" or somthing like that did u plasticgauge everything to check ur clearances if not thats where i would start
I seen that happen to a first time engine years back.A buddy of mine had the same problem and we found out he had the rod caps mixed up.Are the caps matched to the right rods? Also, are they backwards? The stamped numbers on the cap & rod should be together.
Carquest polished the crank and he said he would get me the right bearings. yes stamped numbers are together. You think I have the wrong size bearings?
I'd agree. Happened to me years ago with my first rebuild. Had the crank ground .010 under, and they gave me .020 bearings with it. I didn't check, never occured to me that could happen. Easy enough to pull a bearing and check, the undersize is stamped right on the back, near the end. -TD

What are the Plastigauge readings telling you? You ARE using Plastigauge, aren't you???......
Bearing size could be wrong.I worked on an F650 one time that was knocking and found the factory reman long block was assembled with std. bearings on a .010 under size crank.
You could also have mixed up the main caps. They're numbered 1 thru 5, numbers 3 & 5 are obvious as to where they fit, numbers 1, 2 & 4 can be installed in the wrong position. Also, the rods, in addition to having the numbered sides together, also need to be facing out toward the block for the cylinder banks they fit on. As for plastigauge, I've never used the stuff and never had problems, as long as the bearings are the proper undersize and the crank turns freely. Once all the pistons and rods are in place, you'll need a breaker bar and socket to turn it, but it should also turn somewhat freely without undue force.
The main caps are installed correctly. I checked the rod bearings and they say .001US, so they should be good since the crank was polished. I never took the pistons of the rods so they are right. The pistons were installed with the arrows on the bottom facing towards the front on the block. What can it be?
It's been asked before but I never saw a response. Are you sure you didn't swap caps between the rods? Are the locks on the two halves of the rod and main bearings together?
