Air intake noise
I have a 99 Ranger 4.0 5 speed auto, 4 door quad cab 4x4 with the off road package which is making a loud whinning noise from the air filter box. It does it when it's warm to hot outside and I have had the AC on. it really gets loud when it is at an idle but the gauge shows the temp in the normal range. I removed the air cleaner lid and the noise is comming from the hose that runs to the MAF sensor and then onto the throttle body. The only mods I have made are a K & N air filter and reprogrammed with the super chips tuner. It seems to run fine but the noise is really bugging me.

DBtoter, I had the same problem, sounded like a train whistle to me. I posted this thread and ended up the IAC valve. I have the similar setup on my Ranger. Take a look at this thread.
