How much to spend for a new trans?

I have read about guys on this forum who have bought "install it yourself" trannies for something like $500 to $800. I would be a biut nervous about that unless it was a reputable firm and good warranty.
Most rebuilds done in a shop that I have read about or expereinced have been between $1500 for minor work to around $3,500 for a tranny that was in bad shape.
My 94 E4OD 460gas that I use to tow a trailer cost me about $2,500 back around 1997. I told the guy I wanted it bullet proof for towing. he upgraded all the weak links of the E4OD and replaced the Sun shell and a few other hard parts, no gears. I have put about 30-40K miles on it since towing an 8,000# trailer, maybe 30% of that time. When I pulled the pan last year to change fluid it looked good as new.
I suppose for racing or a rebuild where things like gear sets are replaced, you would get to the $3,500 range pretty easy.
Good Luck,
