Is it for real, or some sort of aftermarket modification ?

There were not factory ford, but companies did do the conversions. Here is an ad from a 1960 "hildy's bluebook"

The ad is from 1960, like you said the trucks aren't obviously, if I find a 60 crew-cab add(with '60 trucks) I'll post it. -4speed

Most were built for construction outfits and the U S Air Force had a ton of them for runway trucks. Dow AFB in Bangor, Me. had a bunch of them. I lived down the street from there and used to see them lined up by the road ( Union St ) along with a bunch od "Big Job" dump trucks.
