With a diesel you will have more up front costs ($5000) even though I have a diesel, for you the best option would be the v10 because you are not towing a heavy load or expect to (or are you?) If you are even contemplating getting a large trailer go the diesel (trade in is better) and you'll just like it. But - if you can drive both, with the same options, if possible - then decide.
Also if you drive short distances daily the v10 is better - the diesel needs to be ran 5-10 miles to get contaminates out of the oil

Another vote for the V10, it sounds like it will suit your needs better. And just because you have a larger sized trailer doesnt mean the V10 wont tow it well. It seems like alot of people that say that the V10 wont tow well havent driven or towed with an 05/06 V10. What part of the country do you live in?
The V-10 will handle all of your chores with great ease indeed. But approaching it from an economy standpoint you will not get a very good return of your investment. The initial cost of the diesel and its tranny is over 4 grand. At that rate, based on fuel savings of the vehicle you will be a fair bit over 200k miles before you reach the break even point and that hasnt even addressed the additional maintenance on that puppy.Good luck on your purchase and dont forget to squeeze the eyes outta the dealer when you do buy.
Did you miss the last 6000 posts here and on the diesel stop site where all of us 6.0L PSD owners ( I own 2 of them) are very disappointed that we do not get any where near 20MPG? Yes there are a few folks who claim that high a mpg figure but the common users is experiencing 14-16 mpg empty in mixed driving. So stop with the BS and give the original poster some fact based thoughts why a PSD might be the better choice. Not just your personal biased opinion.
And whats you fixation on higher resale? When was the last time you surveyed the used truck lots in any one of 5 major cities? We have at least 15 2003/2004 PSDs sitting out front down here for the last 4 months that won't move because the so called value of the truck is with in $2000 of a brand new out the door 2005 OR 2006 model. And yes Virginia right here in good old FTE there are dozens of posts about this topic also.

sorry to hijack your thread... hopefully this will not start another tired old oil vs gas debate but I know my post here will draw fire! OK Nomex all zipped up (grin)
C'mon Fred, You know as well as anybody that there is a fair percentage of folks that no matter what the truth is,they have to justify their actions.Meaning, they bought the diesel because it was another box to check on the spec sheet, was hung up on having the "best" toy they could get financing on or any of a dozen more reasons. The truth being, they didn't do ALL of the math before they lept. But we know better when it comes to spec'ing the engines and what to look for down the road so far as potential resale value and ALL of the parasitic costs associated like upkeep and maintenance.Sorry for the rant.Couldn't help it.
What you fail to understand sir, is that busting up Loveland pass at 11,946 feet in a V10 powered King Ranch that cost $3800 less than the exact same truck with a 6.0L PSD, and the look on PSD owners faces when they see the big beautiful Triton V10 badge leading the pack. BTW she was scaled at 22,857lbs and the new 3v V10, 5R110w and 4.30:1 gears was more than able to pull the weight. BSEG indeed!
Now once you add to that expensive $3800 motor the costs of all the add on toys necessary to gain back that "worth every penny" ego trip, many of us V10 owners will still have the BSEG because we really don't give a rats behind that you have money to burn. Thanks for playing, and keep on helping the American economy! You sir, are a great American!
wow, i just got burned, but in all seriousness, fredvon makes a good point that the v10 can eat a lot of gas before it would be less cost effective than the diesel, so buy which ever engine you want, but my 2005 6.0 PSD has been flawless and worth every penny and you can't beat the sound!
5 mpg get the v-10
10 mpg get the v-8
15 mpg and POWER u know what to do..and when u get rid of it around 100000
miles if u wanna get your 65% of your $$$ ......
Have you ever driven/ridden/been around a V10? I dont know what you are talking about but the V10 getting 5MPG? Yea, thats REAL close to accurate. I get 10.5 towing 7500lbs at 75mph. 14 unloaded on the highway at 75. YEa, thats REAL close to the 5 you state. The V8 and V10 are only about 1.5-2mpg apart in both situations. And yea, the 6.0 should get 15, I mean you'd hope so, its a diesel. But then again, when you pay 20-30 cents more a gallon for diesel vs. 87, that adds up quick too. Next time, please try to make an informed post if you want to add to this discussion.
personaly i drive 12 miles a day.(for work) and there are 20 (FOR REAL)stop lights.in the morning not a problem.but afternoons different story.
had a 04 f-150 with 3v 5.4 V8.got 11.8 mpg in the city
now 05 f-250 with 3v 5.4 V8 getting 10.8 mpg in the city,
i dont wanna know what would happen with V10....9.8mpg or 8.8mpg???
i dont mean to pi$$ anybody off but either my math is bad or you guys live in a place with one stop light and two stop signs.
man thats much better input. thanks. in real life my v10 getts 11.46 to 12 .6 in stop and go and 15 on the highway. that is why most of us see the almost same with a 8 and the 10 motors. just the 10 is way stronger.
Sounds like a gasser may be better for your application. If you drive enough miles 20-30K+ a year the diesel becomes more attractive. Make sure you drive the V8 to see if it has enough power for you. After owning the 6.0, I would only consider diesel and V10 in a truck this size. Mileage isn't gonna be a strong point on any SD (except for the 6.0s that get 20mpg, mine doesn't). So you have a choice of big, bad and worse.
i will stick my neck out a bit here. both the 6.0 and v10 super dutys are great trucks capible of doing the same thing.one can tow a bit more then the other , but both are great rigs.
