Has anybody installed a plastic gas tank? I'm thinking of putting one in my 86 bronco and was wondering if anyone had any insight on plastic vs metal.
I had a friend tell me that the plastic ones don't fit as good, but i am looking for more opinions.
haven't put any in, but the 92 F350 crew cab I have here has one in the rear, but the front is steel... the Dodge I stripped for the Cummins had a poly tank as well. Both I believe to be factory.
All I have to say is: PLASTIC DOES NOT RUST! Just the sender.
I bought 2 new tanks for my truck and could not find any plastic tanks that were worth the $$$. But I would rather plastic. Also if your in the bush, plastic does not puncture easy as the steel.
You need to buy the appropriate straps to mount the plastic tank, but they fit pretty well. Your old straps will likely be rusty, and may snap on removal anyways. Great time to install a new pump and sending unit. As for the rust problem, spray it down, once installed, with some rocker-gaurd. That should keep it in check for a while. Just make sure to tape off the electrical connections, and then slide some shrink-tube over the wires before plugging them in, and put the lighter to them to ensure a water-proof seal. Should keep things working for a long time to come.
