Has anyone ever swapped in a set of mid 1980's E350 leaf springs into their 78/79 F250. The measurements look like they will fit. My only concern is that the van leafs are slightly different at the shackles.
I'm looking at swapping out the springs on my F250 as well. My guess is that they should be fine.
That swap will probably make your ride a little rougher when the bed is empty however. Hard to say how much.
I too replaced my springs a while back. I used 73-79 F Series springs as springs of later years are too long. The pins on the springs are to keep the axle from walking around the spring. I would adivse putting the correct springs under your truck for safety reasons. In addition if you load your truck the springs grow in the eye to eye dimmension and may cause failure at a shackle.
Yes the pivot shackle is there to allow growth in the eye to eye dimmension when loaded. I know the 80's & 90's F pickups have longer springs. When put into a 70's truck there may not be enough room for the longer spring and the growth.
I ended going to Pick & Pull off Barlow in the SE and pulling a set from a 77 F250. I just cut them out with a set of bolt cutters and put them in my truck that afternoon. I definatly won't put 4000 lbs in the back again.
