i have a 78 f150 with a 351m. Problem is that the engine died on me. Im not sure what exactly happened but it did overheat and ever since then there has been a steady knocking noise inside the block when the engine is on. The noise and the intervals between it match how fast the engine is going. so if i was going faster the noises would go faster and vice verca. Does anybody know what this noise is? If figuring that its something bad and I am going to have to replace or rebuild this engine regardless as it has 230k on it. I need opinions on how i should go about doing this for as cheap and as fast as possible. I have never rebuilt or replaced an engine on my own before and i need some ideas on how i should go about this and how much its gonna cost. I was thinking of getting a long or short block for this project. Is that the way to go? I dont have 2000 dollars for a reman so cost IS an issue with this. last time i parked the truck the engine still ran but knocked badly. My truck has been a hassle to keep now that it dosent work and i need to get this project done so I dont have to get rid of it. ANY advice is much appreciated. thanks
Consider this. Buy an old LTD or such with a running 400 and rebuild it. you'll have much more torque and if the engine is at least running OK, not knocking or getting hot then you will probably be able to reuse the block, crank and rods. That might not be true with the one you have. You could get a budget rebuild kit mail order but you will still need some machine work to do it right.
