I'm a new guy. I have a 96 F150 with a 4.9 litre. In Feb. 05 it was making what sounded like a bottom end problem (rod or crank) It finally quit, and I purchased a rebuilt engine from City Motors in Dallas, TX. The FIRST engine we installed had a crack in the #5 cylinder. City Motors would not warranty the labor, but I was able to prod them enough to ship another engine without having to pull the cracked one and take it to them. The SECOND engine lasted 8000 miles and the cam broke. I never sent my original engine back to get the core charge as I didn't trust that I was going to receive an engine that worked from City Motors. So now I have my original engine, the first engine with a cracked cylinder (but what appears to be a good head) and the second engine with the broken cam.
So.. Should I get a third engine (stilll under warranty) from City Motors (Don't really want to drop another piece of junk from them in my truck), or should I buy a new (crate) engine from Ford. Or do I try and piece together one engine from the three I have? Or do I send my original engine off to be remanufactured? Of course I want to keep costs down, but losing work time is expensive also. I want to do what will actually result in an engine that will last.
The truck is in good shape. It is my work truck and I have already replaced the tranny, wheel bearings, brakes, u joints, radiator, heater core (and more) About the only thing other than the frame, body and suspension that has not been replaced is the starter and alternator.
I have done quite a few searches on the web and have not found new engines for sale, only rebuilt, so if anyone knows where to get a new engine please let me know.
never go with that company it is overpriced junk. get one from a good shop like s&s motor i have bought from them before and no one here has any complaints about them. www.rebuilt-auto-car-engines.com
I've heard good things about Jasper Engines, but no personal experience.
Honestly, I do not know your mechanical experience, but I'd consider putting something together myself. The 4.9 L will last forever when properly assembled.
It turned ouit that it was the timing gear, not the cam. The 4,9 comes stock with a nylon timing gear. If you ever rebuild one go ahead and get a metal gear, it was only about 30 bucks. I put the metal gear in and she fired up. I also sent my original engine out to be milled. Im going to rebuild it (with the help of my buddy that knows what he is doing) and then pull the city motors engine and drop my original rebuilt ourselves in it.
Question: Does anyone have any suggestions on a cam (or any part) that will increase gas mileage? I may as well splurge while Ive got it torn down. This is my worktruck and I am not that concerned about horsepower, mainly economy.
Clifford performance has a lot to offer for inline 6 engines. I also recall jcw having a fuel saver cam kit. Any major cam manufacturer should be able to point you in the right direction.
