I'm looking to get a newer truck but not sure about how long a v-10 will last. I own a '96 f250 4x4 pwr. stroke now but am looking for a crew cab. I need input on getting another diesel or try the v10. Also which tranny with the v10 ? Thanks
05+ has the 5 speed torqueshift as the auto and a ZF-6 available as the manual.
99-01 has a ZF-5 5 speed and the 4R100 as the manual and auto choices, respectfully. (somehwere the 5 & 6 speed overlap in model years.)
01-04 has the ZF-6 and the 4R100 as the manual and auto choices, respectfully.
I do not see why a duty cycle before rebuild couldn't exceed 250K given proper maintenance. Of course, this depends on the "life" it leads.
Whatchya gonna do with it?
Oh...and WELCOME TO FTE AND THE GREATEST V10 FORUM ON THE PLANET!
Easily 250,000 miles with the V10. Diesel or V10, go manual. As of right now, I'd wait till '07 and the 6.4L before purchasing a new diesel. IMO you should stay with the '96, but you said you needed a crew.....Unless your going used, then try to find a newer 7.3 in crew config.
I am one of three partners that has 8 V10 auto 4x4 doing landscaping, lawn care, light and heavy hauling and we are considering going back to the 5.4 as we retire some of the trucks down the road. We will keep several as V10s for the heavy work. We opted to get two 6.0L PSD for the long haul hot shot trucks and over the two years now they have been a disapointment. Nothing serious, both get crappy MPG and both have had their share of the growing pains of TSB and recall time in the shop. Down time is lost money to us. The up side is we find that the V10s can handle the loads and the current diesel vs gas prices makes using the lower mpg V10 about even money (also considering the lower service/maint costs)
The question is are you looking at 05/06 new truck or the 01-04 used market?
PSD, V10, auto, or stick, all will do the job you are describing. I would look for 4.10:1 rear gears and shy away from the 3.73:1 unless the price was just too good to pass up. The 3.73 will do the job, just that the 4.10s are better to get a Crew Cab and heavy load rolling.
