I just bought a 1990 Bronco about 2 weeks ago..Its a 302 auto trans 6 inch lift with 35 12.50 a/t's..The truck runs great and only has 116k on it..The thing I noticed is the transmission seems to be slow to downshift..it does great on highway but in town or when you slow down it seems to stay in overdrive and will lug the motor if you dont give it almost 3/4 throttle..Is there a fix for this?..Do the tires throw the CPU off or something?
were the axles re-geared for those 35 in tires? You should probably have like a 4.10 axle ratio for those. Also have you checked for codes? Thats the first thing everyone on here will probably ask you, and with good reason. I checked my codes, and found my vehicle speed sensor (top of rear axle) and my manual lever position sensor (on driver's side of E40D) were both out of tolerance. After replacing those and erasing the codes, mine flys up and down the hills again.
actually with 35's he should have a 4.56 or 4.88 gear ratio.
If your driving around town turn off OD. there is no reason to run in over drive unless you are going 55+ especially with that motor and those large tires. I would almost bet your still running stock gears and that is affecting the motor, tranny for sure.
Kemical has it right. If you are going under 55 keep it out of overdrive. It is hard on the tranny. My truck used to do the same thing if I kept it in O/D under 50. I put in the Transgo kit and now it will down shift hard in a blink of an eye. That is the best thing I have ever done to my Bronco.
