trailer brake wiring ?

My dad just bought a 16" flatbed trailer. The problem the lighting works but not the brakes. The trailer has a 6-pin connector (i'm guessing common on any utility trailer) the truck has the 7-pin rv connector. I bought a hoppy adapter wish I would of bought a whole new cord instead. There's 2 wires coming from the brakes a red (pos?) and red/brown(neg.?). Up front the red/brown has a yellow wire spliced into it which is grounded to the trailer. So the actual connector only has 5 wires going to it. The brake controller does work on my rv. I seriously don't think the wiring is right on the trailer. Seeing that the Kubota tractor we bought it with wasn't put together correctly also my dad won't be suprised. Anyone shed some light? Eric

It could be something as simple as rust on the magnets. Have you driven it a few miles hitting the brakes often to sand the rust off or just tried them in the yard? Next, you need to take a tester and see if you have power on the wires right before the hubs. There could be a broken wire anywhere, but usally it will be at the magnets inside the hubs. Pull the wheels and hubs and check in there. While you have the hubs off, grease the bearings so that you know when they were done.

Can he not also have someone apply the brakes and hold a compass near each wheel, and he should see a response if the magnets are engaging, it should effect the compass.
Should save him from having to pull the wheels right away.

Yea, the compass trick will work, I just prefer to use a test light to check. The hub pulling to check power is only if you have power outside and the brakes still don't engage. Brakes working or not, I would still pull them and grease and adjust the bearings. That way you will know when it was done and not have to worry about that.
