I have a 1984 F150 300-6 and just had the distributor pin replaced. About 8 hours and 200 miles later (I went out of town to help someone move) it went out on me again. I'm told there might be trouble with the oil pump and might need replacing. Does anyone have an tips on replacing it, how easy, hard, or time consuming it might be? After paying someone money to work on it, I think this might be something I can do.
Any tips or help would be appreciated.
It can be fairly involved. Get a Haynes or Chilton's and they can step you through the change. Basically you need to drop the oil pan. You have to remove the nuts from your engine mounts and I would suggest loosening the nuts on the trans mount and jack the engine up. If you can get it lifted about 4 inches, you can block it up at the mount locations with a small piece of 4X4. 4 inches should give you enough lift to completely remove the pan and then replace the oil pump. If you can't get the pan completely off, you'll need to work and feel around blindly for the oil pump and wiggle it out the best you can. You'll probably drop a couple of wrenches in the pan if you have to do it that way. Then replace the 4-piece gasket (another pain) and bolt the pan back in place. If you can, try to get the one piece rubber gasket from summit. They make it for the V-8s and I'm not sure if they make it for the 300 I6. It's a tough, time consuming job.
I have had this problem more times than I want to remember. first get a really good quality pin (aftermarket) then only use a FL-1A filter.(or quality brand) and if you use 20/50 oil drop down to 10/40. it is not that hard to replace if you have moderate skills and are patient.(if you con a friend to do it, this is a rated a 4 six pak job. $50.00)
