I have an '82 F100 with a 300 I-6. Today it started skipping with compression going into the crankcase... even blew the PCV valve out of the grommet.
So... what I need to know is the bellhousing and motor mount patterns on the 300. Is it the same as the V8 small block? I have a 351C that I can drop in while I rebuild the 6 if it will bolt to the tranny and such.
I believe the 351C is considered a big block and I'm not sure the tranny will bolt up. I know that the housing on the 300 and the 351W are the same for the tranny. I believe if you measure the distance between the top bolts of the housing on your 300 and that matches with the top bolts on your 351C, then you have the same bolt pattern. If I recall correctly, the center to center measurement should be 5 1/4".
I forgot to mention that the motor mounts will not match. The 300 has towers bolted to the front cross member that would need to be removed and the 351C rides on mounts bolted to the frame and the backside of the cross member.
The Clevland will bolt up to yur tranny. The bellhousing pattern are the same. The Clevland is also considered a small block. You will probally have to fabricate some type of motor mounts or get a PAW catalog and order a universal motor mount kit for the Clevland. Personally I would stick with the Clevland. It is a really good motor and would be alot better than that old six. Just make sure you use the flex plate or flywheel that's ment for the clevland other wise you could have a severe vibration.
Is it alot of work to convert a six to a 8. i have a 89 crown vic w/ a 302,could i use everything from that car to put in my truck.I am putting it in 81 f150
The 300, 302, 351w use the same rear bolt pattern but starters and flywheels can vary. The 351c and 351m use a different rear bolt pattern than the 300. When swapping motors keep the flywheel from the V8 engine on the V8 engine. Sometime around 81 Ford changed the flywheels in the 302/351 from unbalanced to balanced or the other way around.
By chance have you gone way too long since an oil change in your 300? I've owned about 10 trucks with the 300 and they can start too miss if you are way overdue in the oil change and drive in town a lot like me.
this thread is 7 years old and filled with misinformation.
I wonder if the original poster even still has this truck!!
FWIW: The 351C shares the bellhousing pattern of the 300I6/289(late)/302/351W
The 351M/400 are a tall deck version of the 351C, ONLY the 351M/400 has the 370/429/460 bellhousing bolt pattern.
Also, 300's, 302's, 351C & 351W use the same starter, providing the starter is matched to the # of ring gear teeth.
transmission is the same.
80-82 351M motormounts on stock V8 (other than 460) frame towers,
80-82 351M throttle cable w/ edelbrock 2bbl to 4bbl extention
V8 radiator in an opened up 300 core support.
