actually, I think that a lot of people can't figure out that they're better. They only know about phillips, and can't see why a square drive would be better, and they wear the bits and screws out faster, because they abuse them so badly. They're good for those of us who can drive a screw in straight, with the screwdriver going in straight behind it.

I do have to disagree with you on one point: There are times when a fastener is in a location that you can't get a straight shot at it with the screwdriver. With a Phillips head you can angle it in and usually still get a good purchase on the screw, but with a Robertson you have to be straight-on to the screw to fit the tip into the square hole. Think of the screws that hold a doorknob in place for example, with the **** in the way you have to angle in to get at that screw. A Phillips will do that. -TD

On Edit: Interesting...looks like we were typing about pretty much the same thing at the same time, Ryan.

They both SUCK. Actually, they don't. They only suck when they are rusted. What I absolutely hate is fixing lights on a trailer, and some idiot put Robertson screws in. They come stock with Phillips. Someone changed a light, lost one or both Phillips screws, or broke one. Then the idiot put a Robertson in, but the second one is too small for the hole that they just drilled out. So they get a bigger screw that takes a #3. So instead of making one trip up the ladder, worst case scenario I'm making 3 trips with 3 different screw drivers.

Tell you one thing though, if even one trailer was standardized one way or the other, it makes my day.

Another thing, self tapping #2 Robertsons are the best. The ones we got at work take either a #2 Robertson, or a #2 Phillips, depending on what you got in your hand. I'll take a pic of one and post it maybe tomorrow.
