Do local governments buy foreign nameplate vehicles?
For some reason, I had thought city, county, state and the federal governments bought only US nameplate vehicles (ie, bought only Ford, Cheverolet, Dodge, etc). However, I recently saw what I thought were state tags on Nissan vehicles.
Just wondering if the government fleet vehicles now include foreign nameplate cars?
(Would not surprise me if local governments bought US-made foreign vehicles from a local manufacturing plant employing a lot of local voters)
Thanks.

It could be that the manufacturer has a facility in that state/municipality. We have a Toyota engine plant, a Mercede plant, and working on Honda and Hyundai plants in Alabama.
Here where I live, the local govt' uses Ford trucks and cars and the city police use Chevy Impalas. The county and state police use Ford Crown Vics. I had a state trooper tell me that they also have Chevy Imps' but don't use them on interstate patrol at all. He said they can't take the abuse the Fords can....which is understandable considering the difference in the two vehicles.
Haven't seen any Nissans in any fleets yet...even with the Nissan plant at Canton.
Saw a new Beetle Police car in San Gabriel a few weeks back. Looked like it was meant to be in black and white. Tons of car dealers in town, so it might be a local promo gimmick.
Coming soon: Dodge Magnum and Charger PD cars with the more powerful than a wheezing Crown Vic Hemi.
There are quite a few compressed natural gas (CNG) Civic sedans along with CNG Crown Vic police cars and pickups. Honda (US) is the only maker of small CNG cars. The problem is that under the Ford or Chevrolet nameplates there are no hybrid or CNG small cars and these government fleets want to at least promote the "image" of saving the envrionment.
About four or five years ago, the Baltimore City Police Department bought some Geo Trackers. They were torn up in about a year. With the quality of cops they have now, the Crown Vics are about the only thing that will stand up to their abuse.
