can anyone tell me about code readers? what are they? Are they a good investment? How do the hook up to the computer? What is a good model to look into?
Code readers are exactly what they say and nothing more! They cannot view data and troubleshoot like a full blown scanner such as Snap-On {my favorite} & OTC. If you can't afford the scanner, don't by a code reader, just check out the link on the Fordnatics.com page called EEC IV Self Test & codes. They have the best info. you can obtain for free and is really accurate!

I've never used one but...before you spend your money I would suggest buying "Ford Fuel Injection & Engine Control" by Charles O. Probst, SAE. After reading that book it looks like your scanner will only help you solve some of possible problems...a scanner can not read a "MAP" sensor neither will it tell you if one injector is plugged causing your O-2 sensor to take a "lean" reading and then compensating by making all the other injectors to run rich. To really "do it right" it looks like to me you would have to have 5 or 6 testors such as voltage/ohm meters, tach, "MAP" testor, pressure/vacuum testors. etc. besides the code reader. Good luck.
I agree with you, I dont want to spend 65 dollars for a gadget that doesnt tell me EXACTly what the/a problem is. Can you tell me where I might find a copy of the book?
