Hi,
I need someones opinion on weather or not i should use my truck to pull a trailor. What im wondering is if my 87 f-250 w/460 & 4spd would have a problem pulling another truck on a car trailor on the interstate. Im looking at buying a trailor but i have to use this truck even though my dad has an 02 f-150 and my grandpa has a 99 f-250 but we live on a farm and both those vehicles are wrote off and cant be used for this purpose. My 87 has a 460 with closed chamber dove heads, edelbrock performer intake and cam, and a edelbrock 800 cfm carb. it is bored .040 and the rebuild was about 5,000 miles ago. Normaly this truck runs about 210 degrees. Since it doesnt have overdrive, at 75 mph its doing about 2800 rpms. Its always hot, about 85-90, outside and i would be going about 50-75 miles. Do you think my truck would get too hot pulling or would it work?
Your truck will pull the load, just slow it down so it doesn't heat up as much. The 4-speeds don't have overdrive and remember, these trucks were made back when the national speed limit was 55 mph. Whatever speed your truck runs with the engine at about 2400 rpm in 4th gear is a descent speed to drive it.
Here are a few things to try to get the truck to run cooler. Try setting the Edelbrock carb a little richer with new throttle rods that have a smaller part-thottle rod diameter (Edelbrocks are often too lean out of the box). Try setting the ignition timing a few degrees retarded from what it is now (sometimes the absolute markings aren't accurate). Check the radiator, dirty inside or outside won't cool very well.
