How common is it for the impellor to go bad on a water pump? I have had many with bad seals but don't believe I have had one with a bad impellor.
Just got a 91 E150 5.0 and it over heats. So I got a new thermostat to put in and found out there was none in at all. I flushed the system and put in a new thermostat and filled it up with water to check it out and it gets up to temp and the water does not circulate.
you need to make sure the pump is turning the right direction. A serpentine belt turns a pump counterclockwise and a V-belt turns it clockwise (looking at it from the front), but i don't know how you know which type of pump it is.
That was my first thought as well. I seem to remember seeing somewhere that the serpentine WP has a different size hub on it so that you can't easily switch them, but I don't know for sure if this is so. I recently bought a rebuilt pump for a serpentine system, I took the backing plate off right there in the parts store to compare the impellers just to make sure. If you already turned your old one in for a core, that would make it a little harder to check (not to mention that your new pump is already on the engine!)
On Edit: Just goes to show that I should read the post a little more carefully, I guess you didn't replace the water pump yet. So, in answer to your question yes, the stamped steel impellers can go bad, I've seen them rust away to practically nothing, and also the steel backing plate can rust through, that's why the replacement pump has a new plate.-TD
