Just bought this truck, 96 F350 7.3 CC 4x4, and saw the trans. out of the truck, before I bought it. Was told it was totally rebuilt. 200 miles later it won't shift from 1st to 2nd. dropped the pan and its full of metal. So, I call the transmission shop, talked to the owner and was told that all that was replaced was the torque converter and the pump. Well, don't ya think there might be other things going on with it than that? I'm wondering if the guy even dropprd the pan? So, now the dealer and tran. shop won't do anything unless I bring it to them. My fear is that as soon as it gets there then they can get there hooks in me to pay for it. I mean if the TS guy tells me that's all he replaced and the dealer says it's totally rebuilt, who flips the bill? And is it going to get sone right? I'm between a rock and hard spot here...
Brought 4r100 in for trans service last week and the told me to converter was coming apart. It has been noisey. told the dealer not to touch it. Pulled the trans out sunday and dropped it off yesterday @ http://www.dynamicracingtrans.com/
Billet converter, power pack clutchs, shift kit ect, ect.. $650 for converter, $1600 for trans...
I bought the truck w/177,000 on it. drove it for a year. now 188,000...
I'm just glad to get it done, and have someone local with a real good reputation that I could have do it..
Unless you have something in writing, you're basically screwed. If the dealer has a sense of honor, he might back up what he told you re: the rebuild. As for whether it's going to be done right, no one here can answer that; anyone doing repairs for free will try to cut costs where possible.

i hate to say it, but DBT is EXACTLLY right... and... when they skimp on the "free" repairs, you can bet that with the torque you mule makes it won't be long before it's "toast" again... so it's up to you... you can scream now and get "something done"... and probably have to do it all again not too long from now, or you can get someone who does it right to do it right... then you'll have a guarantee and you probably won't have any more problems...
If they won't do anything, you could try small claims court, but no gurantees their either. Generally, without a written gurantee or something in writing stating that it was totally rebuilt, it becomes your word against thier word, and it is up to the judge to decide who is closest to the truth. And as stated in the previous post, forcing someone to do the work without being paid for it may well result in really lousy job that might not lost much beyond the typical 12 month/12,000 mile warrantee.
How long have you had the truck? If less than 30 days the law may be on your side. If all else fails newspaper adds are cheap compared to the price of a rebuild.
Thanks guys, well after a long day and phone tag with these F***s, it's being towed into the shop that did the work. He, "can't believe that it won't go into 2nd gear". Well it doesn't and only after 200miles. If they don't cooperate then I may have to result to consiliation court. So, we'll see.
I did fine a 40K trans from a 95' wreck in Ohio for $900, any opinions on going that route?
If only 40,000 miles, it's likely a good deal. It'd be a long drive to check it out, but if you decide to, inspect closely before dropping any green; look for discolored and/or odiferous fluid, large amounts of metal on the magnet, ANY metal in the oil.
$900 for a used tranny seems like a lot. In my experiance, most used tranny's go for about $400-$500 at a wrecking yard. For a 95 wreck I would want to know when it was wrecked, as this is very low miles for a 95, and if has been setting for a number of years you could have other problems, such as leaking seals because they dried out.
Well, the saga continues... They told me they needed to look at it for themselves to see the problem. So, the guy doesn't return my calls all week then yestersay I call him on a buddies phone and he picked up, suprise, suprise. He blew me off and hung up on me. Then called back 1 1/2 hour later and told me the trans is done that the guy rebuilt it and replaced some gears and this and that, test drove it real hard (great)and everything works fine now but, there are no garantees that if I drive it hard that it won't break and that the transmission shop is closed all next week but, he gave him the key and if I pay him $1000 I can pickup the truck... I was speachless. By the time I could formulate words I think what I said was "I'm not paying you a F***ing thing for it". What the hell gives this a**hole the right to fix anything on MY TRUCK!!! So, I told him that the AS IS statement is null and void since he told me that the trans was totally rebuilt in the first place. Before I could finish that sentence he said fine you don't want to pay for it then the truck can just sit and I gotta nother call I gotta go and hung up on me. Tried calling back and he wouldn't answer. WTF!!! I am so pissed! So now I'm going backwards on the deal. So, I turned the deal over to my Father who has been in the buisness for 40 years (car sales) and knows alot of people and thing or two about these guys. So, we'll see... there will be more come, I'm sure of that.
