Well I think I'm almost thru with my 300/6 to 302HO swap. The motor, carb., ignition switch, battery and cables are all new, so far I've put in 4 rebuilt AC Delco starters. What this thing does is turn over and over and does not start untill you let off the key. It dosen't feel like it's starting while it's turning over. Does this make sense? This is a new one on me. 2 Days ago I replaced the ignition switch and the truck runs ALOT better but still has this peculiar symtom. I'm using a starter relay that's new but it's the same type as used on the 300/6. I was OHM ing out the ignition switch and noticed that the power to the ignition system is not "on" when the starter is engaged. Do I need a different starter relay?
The #4 starter is starting to slow down like the others. I'm lost.

What type of ignition system do you have ?? Points ?? Six-wire module ?? EEC ?? Most systems draw ignition power from a source other than the switch during cranking.

Moe, there is definently a wire that comes from the ignition switch,that is attached to the end of the resistance wire before leading to the on the ignition coil.It is called the start bypass wire which provides full battery to the coil while cranking,and once you let go the key,the run circuit takes over with the resitance wire applying less voltage to the coil.You have replaced the ign. switch but you still need to verify that it is good at the switch connector,then moving forward.If you have Duraspark,the white wire of the 2 wire connector is also part of the start function,the red is the run function.You could jumper a wire from the white wire to the on the coil to gain voltage while cranking.I can't tell you the wire color at the ign. switch right now,but I do have it at home if needed.Concerning the proper solenoid,the older trucks used the small "I" stud to apply voltage while cranking,but you would have an extra wire there next to the "S" stud in the harness,depending on year model.I think the trucks with dash mounted ign. switches were wired like that,but you could also jumper a wire from the "I" terminal on the sol.to the " " on the coil if you have the 4 prong solenoid now.

Hey Guys,
I replaced my starter switch with one that has a "I" terminal, ran that wire to the "run" wire I just installed on the ignition switch, now the MSD box gets a momentary 12vdc while cranking. Works like a champ.
