2000 5 speed engagement

I have a 2000 4.6 4x4 with a 5 speed manual transmission. It seems to be developing a problem lately whereas shifting into first gear and sometimes reverse is a struggle. It simply doesnt want to drop into gear easily. My truck has 52,000 miles on it, and I have changed the tranny fluid. This problem started at around 45,000 miles. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum

Have you checked the fluid in the clutch master cylinder? The clutch on these is hydraulically controlled. Near the brake master cylinder you'll see another small fluid reservoir with a hose coming out the bottom of it. Unscrew the lid and remove the rubber boot from inside. It uses brake fluid and it should about half full, up to the line inside. If it's low the most common place for a leak is the slave cylinder which is inside the transmission bellhousing. You have to remove the transmission to replace it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will check the clutch reservoir today. I was curious if this was a common problem with these transmissions as I know that they are a Mazda product rather than the good stuff from the 60's and 70's!

I have an 01 4.6 5 speed....same problem....my reservoir is full also...any suggestions...mine started around 45K also

I did check my clutch reservoir and it is full. It almost seems as though the linkage needs to be lubed. All shifting from 2-5 is smooth as silk--1 and R are the bear from a stop. Any other comments??

Are you absolutely sure you used synthetic ATF fluid in the tranny? Apparently the whole F-150 is now synthtetic (oil, differentials, and tranny).

Not sure what you mean by a struggle. My 03 4.6 5 speed has never easily slid into first gear or reverse. I read where if one shifts into 2nd and then into 1st gear the slid into first gear is much easier. And yes this works and after a while you don't even know you are doing it.

My 1993 Mazda M5OD has become hard to put into reverse and 1st, but I was pretty impressed with the smoothness of my 1999, which I just picked up used, in getting into those same gears. But the shift pattern seems more sloppy on the 1999... oh well.
