Does anyone know of the legal side of getting a title? Let me explain. I bought my first car, let a relative borrow it, and they wrecked it. He "got" me another car to replace it. I believe he did't pay for the entire balance. I had the car for nearly 12 years now. I have the registration in my name but I never got a title for it. Someone told me to file for a lost title. ?
I have never been contacted by the car dealer for the remaining payment. I hate to get the minor repairs fixed and get the car on the road again then have the dealer come and take my car away. This is my first car (actually second if you count the wrecked one), so it does have some sentimental value.
The car dealer is about 200 miles from my location. I don't think they would make that trip just for a 21 year old car. Then again?
Take the registration to the local courthouse. Tell them you want a duplicate title. They will do a title search and be able to tell you if there are any liens againt the title and who has the lien.
I bought a motorcycle and made payments for a year. When it was paid off I waited for almost two years for a title. I finally gave it away as a parts bike. Maybe the dealer or finance company never sent the paper work or it was lost in transit. That is if all the payments were sent on your car. If there was money still owed they would send out an alert to repo companies and towing companies. Believe me there would be someone around to pick it up if they saw it. My brother defaulted on his car when he lost his job and his first son was born. He called the bank and asked them to pick it up cause he could no longer afford it. That was three years ago. The car is still in his drive and his credit report shows it as being written off. He is working with the bank on a settlement now though for a fraction of what the original payoff was.
