Question why not a CAT

I have always wondered why nobody has ever tried to get Catapillar to produce a diesel for the small truck market. They make good motors and people will check it out for the name. I would love to see ford have a Cat.

Low profit margin? Commercial vehicles are tax deductions, business expense, etc., and sold to people/companies who use them to make money, so can have a decent price markup. Could be that Cat does not feel the sales would pay for the R&D.

I've wondered the same thing though. They make several small industrial diesels that seem to be about the right output (don't know about physical size) for a pickup.

I've heard Cat has no interest in competing in the consumer level truck market. I can't find it, but it sounded like they basically didn't want a bunch of people who wouldn't give them proper maintenace, have problems, and then ruin their good name. Understandable.

It seems to me that it would sale really well. I think that it would pay off for them after all what is the diesel option cost 4000$ or something like that, yet i understand that it is the their name that they would be risking. i would love to see a yellow straight 6 in a ford. I would rob a bank to get one of those.... J/K

It would be kind of nice if the big three would sell pickups the way they do the heavies... spec a motor we want installed, but then the trannies would have to go with a common type bell and all that, and they couldn't sell their parts for the premiums they do now with some of the garbage for trannies they sell...

they also have to go through a multi-million $$$ emissions certification process for each and every engine/transmission combination they offered- that's the real reason it ain't happening.
