Well if you had the money you could do as you wish, I meen look
some guys are buying trucks for 50k+ why not get a loner truck
gut it beef it up and whala.
I don't know but would think that cost would be a big factor. I have known many trucker that say that Cat engines are much more expensive to rebuld than Cummins or Detroit. I don't think that manufacturers could offer a Cat engine and be price competitive in the pickup market.
Caterpillar does build a 7.2L engine for the F650/750.... but its a whole lot bigger than the P-Strokes and Cummins... its also a lot more powerful.
I think they are a $13K option. I highly doubt that Ford or GM could afford to add a $13K pricetag to a 1 ton truck and sell it over the P-Stroke/Turdmax.
Cat does have an engine small enough for a pickup, but it is still huge. It's a 3208, and you'd really have a tough time trying to fit it in a one ton. But it can be done. It's a V8 by the way.
Doesn't the F-650's and up have Cat's in them? I would love to see them in a one-ton however.
I don't know about the new trucks, but yes, there have been some installed in the past. It's a little different though, that is no longer considered a light truck, those are medium duty, and different emmisions lwas apply, and a completely different buyer market. Those trucks would get the same attention a heavy semi gets, better than most light duty trucks see, partially due to the fact that they have to be inspected regular per DOT rules.
My mechanic/slumlord (joke)/stealership owner amigo has Cat equipment. Backhoe, bulldozers, etc, for his land.
He says Cat is getting out of the USA and basing out of Switzerland. That alone won't help cost. I will have to take his word on that.
The offshore fleet I work for has a 130' crewboat with 4 3412's on it. Real quiet until you mash the throttles and they roar like a *****. I googled for Cat 3412.....seems like they are satisfied with marine duty engines for sure.
GM used the 3208 in their kodiak/briggadere (sp?) trucks.. The thing was a piece. The handfull my father had the misfortune of working around were gutless, and noisy... He said they were "Just a weak motor". Cat has a good name, but like all companies a turd does emerge once in a while...
Well, yeah. The 3208 started out as a marine motor. Nothing big or fancy, just provided the minimal power to get a boat around. Put that motor in a 5 ton truck, you're gonna have problems. It's just right for a 1 ton. Just a pain to install.
