Red face wrong flywheel !?!

I have a 78 F-150 with a 460 and the clutch was slipping real bad, so I decided to replace it. I bought a new clutch from Checker Auto Parts, but when I went to put it in the bolt hole don't line up. The new one was just a little bigger, so I am wondering if it is possible someone put the wrong flywheel on, or did I just get the wrong part? I double checked with them before I returned it, and they gave me the right part according to their computer. I also wanted to replace the flywheel, but none of the local part shops carry it, and neither do the local ford dealers! Does anyone have any recommendations for where to buy a new flywheel and clutch? I am also wondering now if it has the engine in it that the guy I bought it from said it did. I was told that it was not the original engine, but it was from the same vintage. Is there any way to make sure? Are there any kind of engine id numbers on it that I can check? Thanks in advance.

For the flywheel, try a local transmission shop. If you want used, try a junkyard, but have the transmission shop inspect/turn it.

I figured it out. The flywheel I had was off a 360 or something or other. They don't make flywheels for the 460 anywhere, but the flywheel from a 390 fits perfectly. The only reason I say this is in case anyone else has this problem. Just buy a flywheel and clutch for a 390 if you have a 460. Plus then you can upgrade to a 12 inch clutch if you had a 11 inch, like me

The only way that 390 flywheel will work is if you have an internally balanced 460 motor (1978 and older 460/429). The 390 flywheel will still bolt to an externally balanced motor, but that is what you could call VERY BAD NEWS, say goodbye to your bearings.l I would check to make sure that your 460 is externally or internally balanced.

How do I know if it is externally balanced or internally? The flywheel that came off it did not have a weight on it, so I am assuming that means it is internally. I have no idea what year the motor is. I looked all over it for a tag or id number, but can't find anything. Would it vibrate real bad or anything if I put the wrong flywheel on? It seems to run ok now.

If you had the wrong one you would know it, it would shake bad.

All 385 series engines (including all 460'S) are internally balanced, as are all 390's. The 390 flywheel should work. It would be best to balance the 460 crank, 390 flywheel, the balancer and pressure plate as a single unit, but you should have no problems anyway.
