Question FoMoCo A/C Help?

I tried to search for a diagnosis on Mercury on a Mercury site, but came up empty, so... I came back to the site that does help folks............I have a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis with the digital dash, that puts out no cold. the compressor seems to be working fine, and the drier gets icy, and the whole system cycles. Seems normal to me, but......, the odd part to me, is that when the heater, or defroster, or air/conditioner is used, extremely hot air is what I get. The digital read-out indicates the setting I want, but the car doesn't give it, just HOT air. HOpe someone can help me here. Thanks FTE. Fairlane58

Check the operation of the doors. If you're lucky it's just the control unit.. We got one for our '97 Town Car from a junkyard for $40. He had a whole shelf full of them... It may be a broken door though and that's not so easily fixed.

I will check that out. I hate to walk into the local rip-off shop, and lay a blank check on them. Gives me that "vulnerable" feeling!.......Thanks

It could also be the blend door actuator. The BDA controls movement of the blend door directly, as directed by the EATC control unit.

Not sure about the Grand Marquis, but on the Taurus, you have to pull back the dash to get at the BDA. Not a quick fix. Took me about 10 hours when I replaced the BDA on my SHO.

There is a way to test the EATC system on most Fords, maybe it'll work on your GM. The test detects electrical malfunctions that occur while the test is being performed:

1. Make sure the engine is warm and the coolant temperature is at least 120F (49C).

2. To display error codes, push the OFF and FLOOR buttons simultaneously and then the AUTOMATIC button within 2 seconds. The test may run as long as 20 seconds, during which time the display will be blank.

3. The Self Diagnostic Test can be initiated at any time with the resulting error codes being displayed. (Note: Normal operation of the system stops when the Self Diagnostic Test is activated).

4. To exit the self test and restart the system, push the COOLER button. The self test should be deactivated before powering the system down.

Resulting Codes: Anything beginning with 02 (024 or 025) means your blend door and/or BDA are malfunctioning.
