i have a 1996 f150 with a 302 and a 5-speed..if i keep the rpm at about 1200..it spits and sputters and misses. and i cant figure out why it does this..thanks
A clogged cat would be more noticeable under a load rather than in neutral. Sounds like the EGR is the problem, especially since there is a code for the EGR system. The EGR valve is likely opening more than the computer thinks, so it throws the insufficient flow (valve not sensed opening enough) and tries to open it more, causing the truck to run rough. Diagnose the EGR system and you should find the problem.
If its only doing it while driving then you may have a bad speedometer.
They can develope bad spots which and not send the speed info to the computer thusly the computer has no idea how to run the engine. Speed up a bit and its fine again.
it also does it while not in gear....it is worse while stopped than driving. also i dont think it is the speedometer because it does it according to rom in every gear at any speed
It's likely an electrical sensor problem, not an actual dirty EGR valve. Most likely culprit is the position sensor or the DPFE sensor, not sure which one you have. Diagnose the EGR system (electrical tests, etc) and you should find and take care of the problem.
