The first question, maybe a stupid one, how does this work? Does it auto-lock the doors after a certain time? What if your keys are in the ignition? Does it arm the factory alarm? Does it work on 99 Rangers, I assume so.
I'm pretty sure that the Auto-Lock feature on Ford Trucks is the same one that is on my Taurus. The doors lock when the gear selector is placed into Reverse or Drive and the vehicle starts moving.
After thinking about it some more, I believe that what this does is after you put the gear in Drive, the doors lock automatically. My Dads Lincoln LS does that, and my girlfriends Olds Alero did it too.
So I just got home and thought I'd try it:
When the instructions say "with the key on", it means with the engine started and running by the way, and you have to do this all pretty quick. The instructions say 30 seconds, but it seems more like 10.
I went through the steps, and it first seemed like it disabled this feature, though I don't know why. I finally got it to where it should be enabled, but I didn't notice any changes in my locks. I drove around the block, got up to 50mph, nothing.
Since it is kinda late, I don't want to p#ss off my niehbors with all of the horn honking. I'll try it again tomorrow and see what I get.
Well I've tried this proceedure with my 99 XLT Sport, 4.0L 5 spd auto, with the securi~lock system.
I get all the horn notes to indicate the feature is "on" or "off", but with it "on" the doors don't atomatically lock when I start the vehicle, or put it in gear & drive away.
So I suppose whatever is used to tell the system to automatically lock the doors has been omitted on my particular loaded 99 XLT Sport model Ranger.
Guess I didn't fork over enough $$$$$ for the "loaded" model to get it all LOL.
Wonder if Rangers get a different GEM module, from the Explorer & other trucks with this feature?????? Sounds like we have the basic system in place, we just need what ever senses the tranny being put in gear & feed that back to the lock controler????
Would be a nice feature to have for the wife & grandkids, who sometimes forget to lock the doors.
I tried it a few more times also, and I get all of the horn responses like it says we should. All except for the final confirmation horn, the very last one. So, unless there is something else missing, looks like the 99's won't work.
I'll ask the dealership in the coming week. I have to take my work van in for a 5000 maintenance check next week.
