Does anyone know if the cab size of the F250 pickups got bigger as time went on, say from 1966 to 1972? I'm talking about the distance from the floor board to the back of the seat, in other words leg room? I'm only 6 feet tall but every time I shift gears (in my '66 F100) my clutch leg (knee) hits the steering wheel. I heard that the cab size did increase but I don't know for what year(s) and by how much. All I need is three or four inches. I'm thankful I'm not 8 feet tall. I want to stay away from smog trucks so in California that would be, I believe, 1972 and earlier. I need to go from my 1966 F100 to a F250. I need the extra weight capacity and better handling. And, I need granny gear, major time! My customers have driveways that go straight down. I'm tired of burning clutches and spinning wheels when leaving.
the 73-79's got the big cabs 63'' of shoulder room and plenty for a 6 foot guy i am and it works fine with room to spare and yes the smog law was frozen last year and will stay that way for a long time to come.
Steve, The firewall, floor pan & rear wall are the same from 65 to 72. In 73, 4" was added to the rear of that same floor pan moving the rear wall out.
Although the design changed in 67, the measurements are the same.
Thanks for the info John. So it looks like I'm looking for a F250 from 1973 thru 1975 to get the bigger cab and stay away from the smog requirements. I like to idea of putting what I want under the hood and being able to work on it myself.
The Chevy cabs were huge in the early '70's. I thought I was going to have to buy one of those ;o)
most of those are long rusted away, are you looking for a supercab or crewcab or regular. depnding on where you live there is a f-250 supercab for 800.00 near me.
I know what a crewcab is and a regular cab is but I'm not sure what a supercab is. Is the supercab the cab with the extra area behind the seat? If it is it may just my ticket. I could put tools and jumper cables and such back there.
I live in the Santa Cruz California area. Brentwood may be a bit of a stretch for me. I would like to buy one in good condition from someone who took good care of it, maybe from the original owner. I don't need a restored "classic" but just a nice looking truck with an automatic with granny gear. Got to have granny!! I think I've had my fill of manual trannies. It's hard to talk on a cell phone (hands free, of course), write a short message, steer the truck and shift gears all at the same time. I need to pull up into a customers driveway in a respectable looking truck (professional image, you know). My customers don't need to see Jed Clampett arriving in a rusty smudge bucket. I think I'll put an add in the classified section of this site soon.
No prob, BigSteve! I agree, and think yer lookin for a Super or Crew(see my gallery for my 75F250Super..pic three shows the extra cab). I'm just shy of 6 foot, previous owner is 6'3'', and had more than enough room..so room just ain't an issue, afaict. The folding 'rumble' seat sold me on this truck..I love unique crap like that!
i read that a while back for the most part they just do the t/c upgrade and install heavy duty parts. the c-6 is still a 3 speed tranny and has no granny gear like the np-435 i think it is 6.5 to 1 ratio the c-6 does not come close. but i do love the c-6 in my truck. the c-6 does not need a granny gear to start moving a load it will move the biggest load you can through at it no problems i have had 3,000 in the bed and another 4,500 in trailer and it moved fine we did about 50 the whole 15 miles we had to go.
You guys must have read my mind. You just covered my next question. I have often wondered if truck automatic trannies came with a granny low. When I go up a steep hill in my auto cars, no problem. When I try to go up the same steep hill in my F100 3 speed manual my truck say's, "You want me to do what?"
I'm no expert in trannies but if I can get granny low performance in an automatic then I will no longer have to shift gears, "Yippie", I can talk on my hands-free set, "Yippie", scratch myself while I'm driving, "Yippie", put my make-up on while I'm driving... well, maybe not .
I got stuck in my customer's driveway years ago. Fortunately I was smart enough to back down but when it came time to leave I had to make 10 running tries. I was burning clutch and rubber like you wouldn't believe! I mean big time! That 390 was doing it's job but the tires were not sticking. I swore at that moment I was getting granny. All driveways over 70 degrees incline should be banned!! I went out and bought another Ford with a T-18 and that mother can climb a tree. It also drives like a tractor. That truck turned into a horror story that I'll relate to you all in a post I'll name "Don't let this happen to you." Talk about a night mare! I'll post it in a day or two under the "Y block section." Watch for it, you'll get a kick out of it.
Thank's again for all the info, guys. You have answered several questions I've been looking for. My future truck is coming together .

You might try a Super or Crew, 390 minimum w/ C6 for a while and see if it meets yer needs. Simply upgrade the tranny if it don't.
As to yer metro-sexual habits..well..you may live int he right state for that, but this is likely the wrong forum to discuss it!
wide(scratching meself right now!)
the 390 fe engines are good for use in up to 15 ton dump trucks so no problems there . the c-6 is rated to tow 18,000 lbs in f-350 trucks and the kicker of it is the 390 and c-6 from a f-150 is no different than one out of a f-350. uhal used to use the 391 ft engine and c-6 in their trucks and those things were abused bad and you still see a few in use today.
