I purchased a 2004 F250 4x2 CC V10 approximately 1 year and love the truck overall, but have had difficulty pulling my boat on sandy roads. I have considered selling it and just buying a four wheel drive, but I like the truck. How much would be involved in converting this truck to a 4 wheel drive? Would it be worth it or more trouble? And could it be done as good as the factory? Any suggestions?
I seen on one of these sites that some guy did it. Had pic to prove it. He said it cost around $1,800.00 and took a weekend! I highly dought the numbers but it looked possible!
F15099,
I have done several 4WD conversions on 2WD trucks in the past, and to do a conversion on a late model super-duty would VERY cost prohibitive, and quite labor intensive, to say the least. Call a few local truck wrecking yards in your area, and ask for a price on the just a few of the required components, such as the Transfer Case and electronic controls or manual shifter, Transmission, (unless you are going to pay to have your trans. disassembled to change output shaft), Front Differential, hub to hub, leaf springs, shocks and mounts, driveshafts, brakelines and hoses, etc. etc. etc.
If you happen to find where just these parts can be had for 1800 bucks let me know!!
this topic has been gone over a lot. it is not worh the labor and money. to get the full front suspension for a newer sd would cost over 3,000 easy then you need a new trans and transfer case if you get these new it will cost even more about 4,500 for both new then you need the vacuum hoses and all the wires selector switch another 400.00 and then you need a new driveshaft for the front about 100.00 so you are looking at almost 7,600 in parts alone
It is definetly not worth the money even if you could find someone that would do it well. What kind of tires are you running? If its just a small matter of traction in the sand try getting something more offroad aggressive than the stock 235's. I dont know how much sand you are talking about but tires really might help you.
