I went out this morning to do the second oil change on my truck (see Signature). I noticed the coolant reservoir was a little low. I looked around and it looked like the upper hose had leaked at the radiator. I decided to check if the clamp was tight and squeezed it with my bare hands and it snapped in two. My grip isn’t that good. I looked at the other end of the hose and that clamp doesn’t appear to be touching the hose in all spots. I decided to check the lower hose and found the clamp at the engine broken. I took it into the dealer this morning to have the clamps replaced and to do the 05S33 Fuel Line retainer Clip installation Recall. I’m glad I caught it in my garage before it caught me in the middle of no where pulling my trailer. I wasn’t smart enough to take pictures at home in the garage, and the dealer said he needed to send the broken clamp into Ford, so I used my phone to take these blurry pictures. As you can hopefully see more than half of the break is rusty and has probably been that way since assembly. If I were you I would take a quick look and make sure your 05 doesn't have the same problem.
Thanks for the info. I had a small shot of coolant come out where the heater hose is attached to a tube fitting on the block. It seems most new vehicles come with very cheap hose clamps. I replaced that clamp with a good SS screw clamp and I think I will do the same on the rad hoses. Take care, wrench.
thanks man. guess i'll have to go out and check mine. glad nothing happened while towing today to the local drag strip "35 min. away" with a 30 foot inclosed box .
The hose clamps Ford uses has been in question since the Super Duty came out. Many guys have lost them on the road! One guy lost his in the middle of the night during a snowstorm when he was plowing. Talk about a PITA coupled with big $$ loss.
Too bad they haven't updated it.
Once of the first things to do on a SD/Ex is to replace the hose clamps with real SS ones.
Thanks for bringing this to light again! How quickly we all can forget.
Wrench and Monsta seem to have the right answer. The dealer installed new proper SS hose clamps on both ends of the upper and lower main hoses. Note that the overflow, heater and other hoses still have the factory clamps. I think I will pick up some more clamps and replace the rest myself. They also did the recall. Funny the dealer seemed very interested in me sending in positive comments on the survey they say Ford will be sending me. I wonder if they've been in trouble or something. Not a problem though, they took my truck in with no appt and turned it around same day. They will get positive remarks.
Here's hoping it's just a clamp on mine. Came home from a trip to find the truck sitting in a puddle of coolant. Somehow, during the week I was gone, something failed. I started it briefly to see if I could pinpoint the source and it appeared to be coming from immediately behind the fan. The coolant then ran down the tie rod(?) and made a nice big puddle. Reseviour was completely empty.
Seems odd that something would let loose just sitting in the driveway but better there than along the interstate with a 8000lb load behind it.
I've heard about a TSB or some other "warning" about the hose clamps used on the '05's.
My 2001 had the same TSB out, but they had fixed the problem in 2002 or '03? And then they go and do it again. It relates to the supplier going the cheapee route.
When I got my 2001 BRAND NEW in June 2002, guess what? It already had the nice stainless worm-gear hose clamps on it

Dealers get slammed if they don't do well on the surveys. When I was a service writer, my pay was based on the results of the survey. One bad survey could cost me $1000 in commission.
Thanks for the tip on the clamps. I think I will upgrade mine next LOF too...
Great thread! Thanks for the heads up! I do not recall which type of hose clamps are on my V10, but will be checking before the next drive. Better safe than sorry.

My way of dealing with the stock hose clamps is if they come off, they don't go back on
I replace them with Ideal stainless clamps...
It was just funny knowing about the problem going in and realizing my brand-new truck had already either had the problem, or the service dept was doing "make work" doing TSB's to dealer-stock. Or is that standard operating procedure?
I had my first coolant/clamp leak in August of 05. Dealer replaced the big clamps top and bottom. I had another leak from the heater hose. The dealer replaced the heater hose and used the same clamps. This leaked again and this time the dealer(different from the first) replaced the overflow cap. I replaced the hose clamp myself.
These leaks happened after I was towing. Lots of high rpms. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.
Just looked at mine again. The leak seems to be coming from the hose that runs from the top of the engine block (right side as you face the truck engine), and down to the bottom of the radiator where two plastic(?) pieces are connected. The leak is at the top end. I gave the hose a squeeze (cheap hoses too btw) and coolant spewed forth.
change all the clamps to a good marine grade screw type stainless steel man.it's not the hose being cheap it's the dumb jerk that designed that clamp should be shot instead.
