I have an '01 SuperCrew w/ 4.6l. and have just replaced my 6th cop and I only have 65,000 mi. The no.4 cyl. has been replaced twice now and no. 8 only ran about 2000 mi. and quit again. I have read threads about this and some say it is just the boot going out from moisture or whatever. I have found no signs of moisture or cracking on or in the boots. I have replaced nos. 2,4,6,8. 4 and 8 twice. I started suspecting a computer probem or maybe a short in the wiring somewhere. Could this cause coils to go out prematurely? Any help will get you into heaven free.
Are you buying Ford cop's?The auto parts store ones are junk !
May I ask how you know they are bad ? and not an injector dirty or clogged.
Have you changed a fuel filter lately?
You could have a wiring problem between the pcm and cop's

Thanks for the reply, Rich. One Ford dealer part and one aftermarket part have gone sinced they were replaced. All the original parts were factory so that makes Ford 5: junk 1. I know it's the coilpacks because that fixes the problem and I had a very knowledgeable mechanic check it out, i.e. coils, injectors, compression etc. I have had my suspisions, though when I put an ohm meter on one and it seemed to have continuity but I'm no elec. whiz so I wasn't sure about it.
You may also check the hood to cowl seal, rain could be leaking past it. Was there any sign of rust when you pulled the coils? I am assuming that you used dilectric gease on the boots when you installed them.
Check the wires going to the coil packs, look for breaks, etc. My buddy had his 2002 van produce codes and all it was was a crappy conection, also check the GROUNDING !!! Poor grounds leed to many problems. Thats the electronic side of things, Whats the motors condition like ???
Thanks for the reply. The motor is great as far as I know. No problems, I change my oil and filter regularly and fuel and air filters etc. My only problem is the coils. Now, I put the ohmmeter on all of them the other day (I saved them 'cause I couldn't believe they could go out so easily) and they ALL checked out as full continuity. On further inspection, I found one with a hunk broke out of the boot so that is probably the problem with one but now I have to find an outlet for the boots.
When you mention that the wiring could be bad I tend to agree with you but I have had it checked out at two different dealers and they can't find any other problems. I wish I hadn't bought an extended warranty now 'cause it hasn't covered any thing that has gone out or at least the dealers I've seen said I'm not covered and want to charge me for something or other. I have recently bought the AutoTap scanner tool for my laptop so now I am free from their diagnostic charges. Scanner says all is A-OK.
