I was wondering whether someone would tell me if the f250 is basically a 3/4 ton f150 or a long bed f150 or what. Also, could someone tell me a little about the Custom package? Thanks, I hope these don't sound too dumb.
I'll answer in generic terms as you mentioned no specific year. F250 has always been a heavier duty truck than a F150. 1/2 and 3/4 ton terms are meaningless. They indicate series only. Certainly both will cary more than those amounts. An F250 will have heavier suspension, tires, wheels, brakes, and frame in most cases. It is able to haul a heavier load. Most 3/4 tons have a full floating rear axle which gives a much greater load carying capacity. A 1/2 ton will usually pull the same amount given same gearing, axle ratio, tranny, and engine. The rearend used in 1/2 tons are very strong as far as being able to pull. They are, however subject to axle and wheel bearing failure if overloaded. In my 35 years as a FTE (way long before the term was coined)I've seen more Ford rear end failures that can be traced to overloading than any other reason. If you are thinking of buying a truck and are not going to haul a lot a 1/2 ton in most cases is sufficient. If you are going to haul something get a 3/4 ton. FWIW

prior to 1996, ford also had the light-duty F-250. You couldn't tell these apart, because both had the 8-lug wheels. Basically, these where just heavier 1/2 tons. They were under 8600gvw. lighter axles, maybe lighter axles?
