Hey all, I just bought an 88 BII 2.9 4x4 with a 5 speed. Im getting a pretty bad vibration just after i shift into a gear. It goes away around 2500 rpm or so. Its hard to describe, kinda feels like wheel hop but i know it isnt spinning lol. Ive searched alittle on the boards but couldnt find anything exact. Ive read alot about the driveshaft and went and looked at mine and its the weirdest driveshaft i ever seen and pretty small. Anyway, Can anyone point me to the right direction, what should i check for? Thanks in advance
Sounds like you still have the stock CV joint style driveshaft. Vibrations are one symptom they exhibit as they go bad. When mine went, it started as a clicking sound under load at low speeds (like when taking off from a stoplight). Then progressed to a nasty little vibration (felt kind of like clutch chatter). The vibrations were worst when taking off from a stop, but could be felt throughout the driving range. When one of the boots finally ripped, I decided to replace the driveshaft with a single cardon style u-joint shaft.
I haven't seen any good information on diagnosing that driveshaft. There's certainly a good chance that the problem is your driveshaft, but how to tell for sure...?
Thanks for the reply mrshorty. I took off the driveshaft earlier today and it did have lots of "play" in it. I went to the local auto parts store and looked at a new one and it was pretty tight so i went ahead and bought it. I know i shoulda got a u-joint style one but i gotta drive this thing on monday so i went with what i could get immediatly. I drove it around for about an hour and it felt great so i guess it was the problem. Thanks again
