I know the 7.3 will start blowing off boost at about 5 psi, but how can I stop that?
I'm not talking about putting the pedal on the floor, I'm talking about a constant rpm. Running about 25 mph, 2000 rpm at 8 psi in DEEP sand the hissing is loud.
If I increase the rpm the blow off gets louder.
Everything appears normal, no leaking boost line, etc. I just want to harness that lost boost. Wastegate vacuum line is pulled and plugged.
Isn't there an easy (sort'a) way to adjust the spring to let the boost go higher?
Steve_250, this may be what you're looking for: Boost Tube
Delays opening of the wastegate so you get more boost, more power and lower EGT's. It is recommended to install a Dual Relief Valve on the MAP sensor line, so as the MAP sensor does not detect over boost condition and sends a signal to the PCM.
For all 7.3L Powerstrokes 99-03
You can find the boost tube at http://www.blackclouddiesel.com/Ford/ourfordstuff.htm
I don't know of any instance where an opening wastegate makes a hissing noise. I still say there's a loose boot or clamp somewhere.
i have to agree with kwik... you can dissable the wastegate to get more boost and get it quicker.. but hooked up or not i have never heard a hiss like what steve is talking about... i has to be coming from somewhere else... the connections on the boots are the most likely cause...
I checked all the boots and lines, everything is tight.
No oil on anything and no crooked clamps either.
She'll pull down a good 20 psi at take off with no noise.
It's only during the above mentioned scenerio that it happened.
This "seemed" to have happened after I installed gauges but the lines are all good.
It's coming from the engine compartment and not the boost gauge.
That gold thingey where I pulled and capped the red hose, does air blow out of there?
That's something else I've done. Should I cap the gold thing too? I not thinking I should....
Ok let's assume there is no leak. The intake wheel on the 99.5 -2003 will sound like a large hissing noise. No whistle at all. At least it did on mine until I changed out the intake wheel for the OBS version. It would sound like a giant vacuum cleaner. If that's the case for you and you feel like upgrading your truck you can't go wrong the a Wicked Wheel. Some of the best $65.00 I ever spent.
Thanks Kwik, I do want to install the swisher.
I just don't have the time right now, or maybe it's the mechanical expertise to crack open the turbo.
It's weird though, how it just started happening. I've had it under the same conditions many times before I took the red hose off and the hiss wasn't there.
So, does air blow out of the gold thing?
Hmmm, then where in the doodles is the hissing blowing through? The same hissing you were talking about with the stock wheel.
And why now, but not before removing the red hose.
I figured by disabling the wastegate I could get more than 8 psi steady under the above conditions.
