How much H.P. can a E40D Tranny withstand?
Was wondering how much my E40D Transmission could handle H.P. wise. I've put a shift improver kit in the Tranny so it shifts really hard under full acceleration. Reason for the question is I'm going with a ZEX Nitrous kit and will be starting out using the 75H.P. jets. I remember reading a post about a year ago saying a stock E40D could handle 350h.p.

Back in 92 I'm not sure. The tranny was improved in 95 and then they did more improvements and changed the name in 97-98 and renamed it the 4R100. Basically they are the same, and the 4R100 stands for 4 speed with reverse and the 100 stands for it being able to hold 1000 ft. lbs or torque, so they say. SO since they are basically the same, it should be able to hold that much torque. Not sure about horsepower though. Gotta remember those E4OD's were put behind most big blocks and some small blocks and a lot of diesels.

I've got the E4OD on my 1991 7.3. Stock there was no turbo on it, but the first owner installed an ATS turbo. I use my truck for getting around in the colorado mountains, so it gets a fair amount of off road use, though I'm not an real off roader. I've gone through 2 tranny's so far. In my quest to not have to shell out money all the time on tranny's I'm in the process of restoring an old CJ-7. I searched all over for a good replacement for the E4OD, because in my opinion it's junk for the way that I use it. I found that ATS makes one of the best tranny's for hauling, but not for high output engines. Talking with the guys at the local 4x4 shop I learned that they have a mechanic there that took an newer Ford diesel and tricked out the engine, not sure exactly what mods he did, but I go tthe impression that the truck now puts out a ton of power as it can spin 35 inch tires in 4WD on pavement. He blew out the stock automatic right away and replaced it with an ATS tranny. Within a few months it blew and ATS relpaced it free of charge. Within a year the second ATS tranny went as well. This time ATS wouldn't replace it free of charge so the guy went out and look for an even better transmission. He ended up going with artcar transmissions and hasn't had any problems with it over the past year. Now art car makes automatic tranny's for dragsters, so their engineers are quite used to dealing with huge amounts of torque from engines that slam into gear.
For what it's worth, my opion would be to go with a manual tranny.
